I Need A Synonym For Random...

1. Spent the 4th at my parents' house. Their cat, who I guess is new though has lived in their yard for about three years, Black Beauty immediately became smitten with me. (Anyone who knows me or my mother's side of the family in particular should not be surprised.) I guess he looked around the house for me after I left.  While there I went to the wedding of a young woman from my father's church. Judging by who was in attendance, her mother, who has removed some of my stitches in the past, did the guest list...

2.  Finally saw X-Men: Days of Future Past. Though the last two X-Men movies (First Class and The Wolverine) were my favorites of the series, I wasn't really looking forward to seeing the original cast and director Bryan Singer return. As director of the first 2, he's to blame for setting the franchise tone. (You would think it'd would be writers but no...)  The boring black costumes and the massive continuity errors still make me shutter. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised by this.  I don't think even the comic storyline is is very loosely based on ever explained Old Kitty Pryde's time travel powers but it actually does make sense when you consider her original power is to go through walls. Maybe now she can go through the "walls of time" now?

Though I still think the version of Quicksilver that will appear in the Avengers sequel will be better. The version that appears here was kind of cool and the section of the movie where they break Magneto out of the Pentagon was very Mission: Impossible, and therefore, in my book, the best part of the entire film. Because this is how X-men movies go, I am sad that we will never know how Old Wolverine originally met Quicksilver because that timeline now never happened...

Because it's a time travel movie, the horrid X-Men: Last Stand and X-men Origins: Wolverine have been erased. (Although now that  Last Stand no longer exists, neither does The Wolverine...) I'm not certain about the others. Rogue and and Ice Man are still the same age and dating (could erase that shit could they?) but Old Beast was there and he wasn't introduced until Last Stand...

3.  Because I was on vacation I bought Sarah McLachlan's new album, Shine On.  For the most part, at least among artists I listen to, my opinion on album quality is a rollercoaster. Sarah and Dido are the two artists I can think where each sucessive album is progressively more awesome. Well folks, Sarah's streak is over. It's most compatible with her album Fumbling Towards Ecstasy than her last three which I liked better. ("Possession" is still favorite of that album. Is it sad I just realized why I like that song? Those who know me just have to listen to the lyrics to get a pretty good idea...)

Two things occurred to me about her music that hadn't before. My first thought when I heard Shine On was that, instead of "going country" like her contemporaries Sheryl Crow and Jewel, she went contemporary folk. I then realized, her music really always has been anyway. The other thing I realized is that the more percussion the more I like the song. The fact she fell in love married and divorced her drummer Ash Sood, who appears on two tracks here; one of which being my second favorite song on the album, can't be a total coincidence...

4. Besides Crossbones, my second favorite new summer series is Taxi Brooklyn.  Picture Rick Castle driving a taxi instead of being a novelist and you've got the gist of the series which is probably why I like it. After all, there's no completely original idea under the sun anymore... (Maybe NBC should just focus on summer programming?)
