Saw Birds of Prey... or I guess it's Harley Quinn now... As it should've been in the first place after watching it. (Unless we're using the episodes of Murder She Wrote that Angela Lansbury wasn't actually in as a base reference...)
Margot Robbie once again shined as the character straight from her creation in Batman: The Animated Series. I loved the interpretations of Rene Montoya, Huntress and Black Canary and hope this leads to a proper Birds film. Making Batgirl No. 2 Cassandra Cain a pickpocket makes sense (It was interesting having Victor Zsasz featured in the movie when Cassandra's father, David, is the other big assassin in "Bat-verse.") but did she have remind me so much of Short Round from the Indiana Jones films? Under Harley's guidance, she changes her look to Jubilee from the X-Men movies by the end of the film...
Ewan MacGregor played Roman Sionis, also known as Black Mask as you'd expect a mobster with just a touch of insanity. More Joker than Kingpin which makes sense given it's Harley Quinn though I feel it would be slightly more off putting in a straight up Batman film... (He can take his mask off?)
The way the movie was constructed, it made sense for all these characters to come together by the final climactic battle. Traditionally, Barbara Gordon, post being crippled by the Joker and now going by Oracle as she's literally the "Woman in The Chair" providing tech support. I presume she was excluded as Warner Brothers plans to do a Barbara Gordon/Batgirl movie which you can't do if she's already Oracle. But, also, what's her connection to the story...unless she's already training Cassandra to replace her?
For most of the movie, Batman not appearing didn't bother me as he doesn't track down Harley unless he wants the whereabouts of Joker or Poison Ivy but the climactic battle with Black Mask's army? The Batman I know from every cartoon and movie would damn well show up to investigate what fresh hell is going on in his city now. Was he, reluctantly, off planet or in Gorilla City, or somewhere else on Justice League business?
When I reviewed Captain Marvel, I put out the supposition the soundtrack for this movie would "be awesome." It wasn't. I mean, who doesn't like Heart's "Barracuda" but maybe they should have switched it up and used "Kick It Out" during a fight scene?
