Simply Because I Was Told I Don't Post Enough...

As of this afternoon, I now own, when the final volume arrives in the mail, the entire He-man and the Masters of the Universe series on DVD, all bought off eBay. Now that it's complete, I'll probably cool it with the buying for awhile until money comes in more regularly. (I'm going to damn sure try anyway...) Like the toy store chain Child World, this series was a link to my childhood and my grandmother whom I have a few other fond memories of. (Two of my readers understand exactly what I'm referring to.) The three of us would sit on the floor in front of the TV at our grandmother's and watch the show. (I had to watch the show there as I didn't have cable at the time and this was before there was an independent channel in Maine, later to become Fox then WB and now The CW, to show this stuff but I digress...) Watching the series now, I am reminded just how good cartoons were back in the day. They had action but they also had a moral lesson that is seriously lack...

The 500th Post!

This came quicker than I had expected but my day yesterday needs to be discussed. Yes, I'm discussing the Nor'easter of rain that hit town yesterday. This would have been alright but I had to go for the skill tests with that agency as you may remember. I took a taxi down but I couldn't call one for the ride back as the agency's phones had been knocked out by the storm. So I walked. It was only a little over a mile but, with the torrential rain and at times hurricane winds, it was way more of an adventure than I would have really liked. Why not get a bus you might ask? I can never find the bus stop in that section of the city and if I waited for a bus, I may have ended up being just as soaked anyway. The tests themselves went pretty well. He was impressed with my skills using Word and Excel. My 22 WPM speed wasn't so impressive but, since I can get only 30 on a good day, sadly accurate. My readers know about my fine motor control and speed issues. If you don't, ...

Countdown To 500th Post

In anticipation of this milestone, I decided I might as well do a "Book Round Up": The first book I read was Darth Bane: Path of Destruction ; a Star Wars novel set in the Sith Era and written by Drew Karpyshyn who apparently wrote the Knights of the Old Republic video game. One could say it's the first and last of this era since it explains the "Rule of Two" effectively ending the period and getting into the more familiar territory of one master and one apprentice. There may be more written but I really don't see the point. The book itself starts off slow but picks up in Part Two when Des becomes Bane. I recommend it if your favorite character on He-man is Skeletor or for you ladies that prefer to ride in sports cars wearing snake-skin pants... The second book, which I finished on the bus ride down to CT for Easter, was an old Star Trek novel I found cheap on eBay: Mind Meld by John Vornholt. This book, while not as mind blowing as Sarek or the "...

Holy Week, Batman!

For those non-religiously inclined readers, let me explain the title. The week before Easter is called Holy Week. Today is Palm Sunday. This morning, my church was invited by the Episcopal Church diagonally across the street in their Palm Procesional (and blessing) from the Longfellow Monument. Supposedly there were five from my church. I saw two others. There was me, a "PK", a retired minister and our pastor. this makes sense as only those UCC with more church background would do something of this eccumenical nature. As you may know, from reading CS Lewis perhaps, they are a little more "High Church" then we are in the UCC. The service at my church was a little different today. Instead of a sermon, we had an intergenerational dramatic presentation. It was basically the Stations of the Cross which is a Catholic thing, anyway. (The Espicopalians may also do this; I don't know.) Thursday, though I'm going home for the weekend, they're having a Maunday Thu...

Sponge Bob No Pants

Last night, we took a break from He-man and the Masters of the Universe to watch House . During a commercial break, they had a Burger King commercial where we see a man stand up from his bath asking his wife or girlfriend to guess who he was with a sponge on his head. She gives up and he reveals he's "Spongebob No Pants!" The narrator then talks about the new Spongebob Squarepants toys now available. Excuse me? I swear society has gone down the toilet...

Letters, Colleges and Something Else I'm Sure...

For those readers that wanted a bit more detail about my job search, let me give you this little tidbit: I've recently spent a bit of time trying to get letters of reference for a library job at a private school here in town. At first, it seemed like a bitch frankly but once I, at my mother's urging, decided to take the fact they didn't specifically ask for professional references literally, it went much smoother; as it was, two were professional anyway... My college really needs money for expansion as they've been inundating me with mail and phone calls. Once they started calling, I gave in and gave them a small donation as it's really the right thing to do. I joked with my cousin that it was the closest I'll ever get to talking to a young college co-ed... Meanwhile, while this fund push is going on, the school president resigned. Apparently not because of a scandal but it still kind of irks me I had to read about it in the newspaper. Some department, whether i...

Shiny Happy People With Job News

After a successful, problem free trip with my cousin to the mall yesterday, I discovered through an e-mail from I was offered a substitute reference job in West Hartford! They had to wait until I moved, didn't they? Anyway, I wanted everyone to know I have several logs on the fire so overall the move was good as I'm now getting usable bites which I wasn't in CT. Still no concrete jobs yet but people actually call me! In more fun news, we watched VH-1 Classic's (Yes, we get that channel.) unedited live broadcast of the 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. I've blogged before how I've hated the hatchet job VH-1 has done to it in past years so this was totally awesome. If I had to guess, Aretha Franklin two songs and The Ronnettes' three will probably be cut to one each. I had REM's "Man on the Moon" stuck in my head all day yesterday. One of the best parts was Patty Smith performing her mother's "favorite song." Ther...

The Hits Keep Coming.

I've tried hard to blog about good things that I've gone on in my life lately but, frankly, it doesn't make good reading so let me tell you about The Elevator Incident. Thursday, after our internet and phone was fixed, we went out do do an errand and go to the local coffee place. This was the first time we had done that together by ourselves since my move up here. (I'd done it alone but my roommate/cousin is in a wheelchair so snow drifts had been an issue.) Everything was going well until we returned to the apartment building. The elevator was broken. It didn't move. All it did was open and close the doors. Remember, one of us is in wheelchair. Our apartment is on the second floor. See the problem? Problem 2: it was after five in the evening. The answering service for the office was apparently in California. Our maintenance guy was on vacation or something so his replacement, though very friendly and helpful, was not as familiar with our building. (Would things hav...

More Aggravation

Last weekend, at my grandmother's, it turned out my young cousin was in fact there. It made sense he would be but she hadn't mentioned it so I wasn't sure. Anyway, even though he supposedly had an earache, he got me to play with him a lot. My knees really enjoyed playing with cars on the floor...After lunch, we played multiple rounds of hide and seek. (Last night, coincidentally, we watched the Monty Python episode with World Hide and Seek Championships that went on for over eleven days.) On the bright side, taking the bus worked out quite well. That experience is not the aggravations I refer to in the title of this post. This is described in the paragraphs that follow. Monday, while waiting for my agency to get back to me about a possible assignment that I'm still waiting for, mind you, I get a call from a health care company here in town regarding a data entry position. After I assure them it's ok that I look overqualified, I set up an interview. Keep in mind, thi...

Much Has Happened

First, just before I went to the Ash Wednesday service in the late morning, my glasses broke. Let me tell you how fun it is to tape up an earpiece when you can't see all that well... So, Thursday, I went to the mall on the bus to take care of it. Apparently, a spring hinge popped out. She replaced it free of charge. Maybe I looked really pathetic; I don't know. The Ash Wednesday service was intimate as there was only about 14 people total. The president of Bangor Theological Seminary participated as the Portland campus is right there at the church. I've known him for about 20 years. He was clearly taken aback when I introduced myself. I'm a bit taller now... While I was at the mall, I bought a wooden "media tower" for my DVDs. Friday, I put it together, screwing in 30 screws and everything. I rock. Someday, I'll post pictures. Soon, I leave to go to my grandmother's for lunch.

A Quick Note Before Lunch

Welcome back to winter in Maine. We got dumped upon pretty well yesterday. We spent a good chunk of the day watching Season 3 of Mad About You and eating chocolates my parents sent up. Yes, we had a very feminine snowy Valentine's Day. Go us! Today, I really needed bread so I trudged out into the cold. Yay for Rite Aid across the street because even just going that far, climbing over snowbanks, really pissed off my knee. It was like, "I'm going to dislocate on principle!" Thankfully, it didn't but it'll be awhile before I decide to go out there again. I think I'm going to go warm up some soup...

New Addictions and Other Stuff

Ok, lately I've been addicted to the Internet Checkers game that comes with Windows. As you know, I've had broadband access for awhile but something about my new life makes me want to play this game. I certainly can't be more bored than I was in Connecticut so that can't be it. Any ideas? Anyway, I'm not that good at it. I severely beat some French-speaking person once and, another time, I was losing badly then the guy, or gal, made one stupid move allowing me to triple jump him causing the game to end in a draw but otherwise it's been not good at all. And yet, I'm compelled to play. Did I tell everyone we finally figured out how to access the network printer so there will be no repeat of that Tuesday morning fiasco. (Well, the boots thing will probably happen again knowing the PCA help around here but...) Can I get a "Woo Hoo?" I went to church this morning. I still church shopping but I think I'll try this church again. Probably through the m...

Yesterday

Since I mentioned that I was going to see my agency yesterday, I thought you might want an update. I woke up early and was doing well with time until I was trying to find my boots. I hunted high and low and couldn't find them. It turns out, apparently, that some idiot put them in the closet by the door which I would never think to look for them. That problem solved, a new one arose when I realized that I needed to print a copy of my resume to bring with me. Since I don't have a printer of my own (that I can hook up to my computer anyway) and we can't figure out why I can't access my cousin's printer through the network we set up, he was able to get files I put in the shared folder. (The reverse still isn't true but we're working on it.) This wasn't working yesterday. So I tried e-mailing it. The first two or three tries didn't show up in his inbox until after I left. The next try finally worked, however. Yay! Right? Well, after all that, it must of f...

First Quiz Of The New Year

Well, I think this quiz proves I won't starve in this new life: Familiar with Foods You scored 50% Food Knowledge! You had an okay score. You obviously know a bit about the foods of the world, but not near enough. There are so many ethnic cuisines out there. Travel or try some local ethnic restaurants. Link: The Foods of the World Test written by coronacarina on OkCupid Free Online Dating , home of the The Dating Persona Test I had a woman call me from Boston I guess but there was so much commotion neither of us could hear so she just e-mailed me instead. She had seen my resume and thought I might be good for an administrative assistant opening through a Maine client. Unfortunately, it wasn't on the busline so I had to say no but she'll keep me in mind for something else. I called my agency's Portland office today and set up a meeting for tomorrow morning so thing's are shaping up even better now.

New Home, New Post

Hello from the snow-covered state of Maine! I have actually moved and am pretty well moved in. I have the new bank account and bed and the bus pass. I have my computer and internet set up (as you can see) and I have food. Monday, I should be able to get things set up with my agency so yay! I need to still figure out where to find a DVD case and an adapter to hook my old printer up to a USB port but, other than that, things are going well. I even encouraged my cousin to get a blog of his own. Check it out!
