I Am The Quiet Geek!

A revelation hit me the other night while I was trying to sleep. Terry Brooks' Word and Void series continuing with the just finished Genesis of Shannara trilogy (I haven't read the final book Gypsy Morph yet.) Is basically The Dark Is Rising series for a more mature audience. Yes, fantasy book fans will point out that every fantasy series is basically about good versus evil but the similarities here are rather scary.

Both books deal with the Dark or, more creatively, the Void trying to take over the Earth. Both deal with prophecy predicting this would happen thousands of years ago. Both have the ultimate "Force of Good" known simply as "The Lady." Oh, and both a have a Tree...

The differences are great, however. While Susan Copper's series draws off Celtic Myth. Terry Brooks combines Native American myth with typical fantasy elements as elven magic. Though I haven't read it, I'm imagining the ending of his series as more akin to the way C.S. Lewis ended the Narnia series given that we know the trilogy sets up the other Shannara books.

This Is Where I Was And Will Be Again

These are pictures from my first trip down to Southwest Florida this past October. The 'rents and I are going back down tomorrow so I thought I'd give all one of you a clue to where I was. This is a local park called Ponce De Leone Park. I like this shot because it shows some differences between down there and up here. There's some pretty tacky homes down there. Some homes, maybe that one, are worth about a million dollars and don't look much more interesting than that. By the way, we hope to see a real manatee or two this time... This is Gilchrist Park. That water in the lower left corner is actually part of a big fountain. Again, this shot shows a big difference in climate from up here. Interestingly, this park has the more extravagant Ponce De Leone statue/monument. Weird... We will probably visit this park again at least once while we're down. Remind Me

Remind me to complain how boring and unexciting my life more often because as soon as I did, it got really exciting really fast. Last night, we had four visitors arrive from Korea. They like ziti and garlic bread. Go figure. They will be staying until Sunday night. I told my mother (AKA Hyacinth Bucket) she was making way too much salad but did she listen? No. Now we have this huge-ass bowl of salad in the fridge...What's really irritating is first the fork we use to serve catfood went missing now Susie's dish is missing as well... Tomorrow, I have a physical to prepare for my surgery then I go to my orthopedist's to fill out consent forms. Woo Hoo! I hope I can find time for a haircut as well because... Friday, I have a job interview at a library in Massachusetts! It's a reference job but I also will be conducting a book group. I've never done that but it sounds really fun. Thank You Al Stewart

Well, I'm back from taking care of all those cats. It was actually one cat who had the the run of most of the house and 9 others that stayed in one bedroom; two of which I never saw the whole time. The biggest challenge was changing the litter boxes twice a day. One of the littlest kittens escaped from the room about a half dozen times and was harder and harder to catch. I spent most of my time watching old TV series and movies. I watched episodes of: Magnum PI including the pilot, Hunter including an episode the DVD box hyped had Ed O'Niell in it but also included "Fran McDormand" who perhaps is more well known, Charlie's Angels including the episode that aired originally the day I was born which also happens to be Jaclyn Smith's birthday..., Quantum Leap , Remington Steele , Sledge Hammer , Father Dowling and The Avengers .
