Going Solo With The Reviews Today

This post will focus only on  Solo: A Star Wars Story. Star Wars  has always had controversy going back to the old, old Star Wars vs. Star Trek  debate.  It's funny that  Solo  was directed by Ron Howard as franchise creator George Lucas once recognized Ron's brother Clint during a casting session as Balok of the First Federation in the early Star Trek  episode "The Corbomite Maneuver." I bring up this old argument only to point out when comparing the two as I've felt  Star Trek  (at least on TV. Harve Bennett dumbed down the franchise for the movies long before  Star Wars fan JJ Abrams did...)   that Trek was more intellectually stimulating while Wars was pure Good vs. Evil fun.  Solo  is a shining example of this and sunlight-deprived  nerds are up in arms.

A friend pointed out to me the movie explained too many mysteries.  According to the internet, the biggest, most controversial, reveal was where Han Solo's name came from. This was never a mystery worth my time to think about. Sure, he was a  smuggler so "Han Solo" probably wasn't his given name but, until this movie, I honestly never thought about it. I will say though, it's really too bad Robert Vaughn wasn't still alive to play the role of that Corellian  customs agent... (If you don't get that reference, your ranking of trivia master is severely tarnished...)

To me, the biggest gamble the writers made was throwing in elements from the  Clone Wars cartoon. Because I had watched all 6 seasons of it recently I recognized both the name and look of the Pikes for  instance.  This was minor trivia that general audiences probably won't care about but there was a bigger reveal was Darth Maul is still alive. Again, watchers of the cartoon already knew this and why he's on the planet Dathomir. (It just occurred to me, I'm surprised no one I follow on Twitter mentioned it, that this planet was first introduced to me in the novel  The Courtship Of Princess Leia so having Han's first girlfriend, Q'ira, go there is interesting to me...

Bottom-line:  Solo  is a fun romp that you can take your kids to without worrying of them having nightmares for months...

Random Comments Into My Life

We did yardwork yesterday. I picked up a lot of sticks. Home Depot sucks on a Friday morning. My father and I went to get a new gascan for the mower and there was only one employee around to help us...and she didn't know anything about how these new fangled gas cans work... So due to a bank error when I reset my bank account so I could accurately keep track again, I had like a hundred dollars less in my account than I thought so my last bill payment put me in the hole. This would've been all right and easily fixed if I had been paid for the last week of my mailroom job but, oddly, I still have not been even though it's been weeks. I don't know if I can accurately convey how infuriated this makes me. If it doesn't happen soon, heads will roll! Also yesterday I re-watched the Enterprise episode "Regeneration"; this time with audio commentary from the writers. They made some valid points I hadn't considered on the issue of if this episode screws with...

Remind Me

Remind me to complain how boring and unexciting my life more often because as soon as I did, it got really exciting really fast. Last night, we had four visitors arrive from Korea. They like ziti and garlic bread. Go figure. They will be staying until Sunday night. I told my mother (AKA Hyacinth Bucket) she was making way too much salad but did she listen? No. Now we have this huge-ass bowl of salad in the fridge...What's really irritating is first the fork we use to serve catfood went missing now Susie's dish is missing as well... Tomorrow, I have a physical to prepare for my surgery then I go to my orthopedist's to fill out consent forms. Woo Hoo! I hope I can find time for a haircut as well because... Friday, I have a job interview at a library in Massachusetts! It's a reference job but I also will be conducting a book group. I've never done that but it sounds really fun. Sure, I'll be stuck reading many book that sucks but isn't that what book group i...

And Now, A Lame Quiz!

Your Score : Dionysus 33% Extroversion, 46% Intuition, 55% Emotiveness, 76% Perceptiveness Although deeply emotional, you are extremely lacking in self-knowledge. You are somewhat needy, and when bored, may become very hedonistic. Your life is a quest for meaning, above all else. You are most like Dionysus. You are primarily interested in serving others, but your efforts are almost always unappreciated. You aren't confrontational, you're often out of tune with your own needs and unaware of the consequences of your own actions. You are, at heart, a good person. You are very affectionate, and you are very loyal to your friends and family. You are very reluctant to burden others with your own problems, to the point that this in itself can become a problem for the people who care about you. This is a particular of a more general problem. Dionysus sends wave of ruin throughout his personal life. He is the photographer who seduces his subjects. He is the teacher who seduces a student...
