When Captain America Throws His Mighty Shield...

As I was recently discussing with someone on Twitter, I'm not a big fan of "Good Guys Manipulated Fight Each Other" films so it's sad that Captain America: Civil War came out so close on the heels of Batman v. Superman. As maybe I've confessed before I am more of a Marvel fan but that is not why this one was better.  DC fans frequently point out this was the 13th Marvel film while BvS  is only the second of their new cinematic universe. To me, that's why it worked better. The tension was building out of the last Avengers  movie and the characters have interacted for several movies worth of time (One must assume interactions happen off screen as well) so they know each other pretty well. Two friends having a disagreement carries so much more weight than two strangers going at it. 

In my critique of  Batman v. Superman,  I noted that the end of the featured fight hinged on the fact both characters' mothers were named Martha. Here, the big fight ended when Black Widow realized both sides wouldn't back down so she fixed the fight. The later, smaller, fight between Captain America and Iron Man didn't end so cleanly but wasn't terrible and was not out of character...

Loved the introductions of Black Panther and (the MCU version of) Spider-Man and can't wait for their solo films!

I have mixed feelings about the villain, Helmut Zemo. His plot was right out of an espionage movie like the Jason Bourne movies if not James Bond, a genre you know I love. His motivations for revenge and reasoning for going about it like he did was all in line with the comic character he takes his name from but his back story was completely different and, not surprisingly, he didn't wear his iconic purple ski mask. I think they could have seeded some of his backstory in and it would've still made sense but what do I know?

Captain America has been the most consistently good comicbook movie franchises of of all time and this movie does not harm that statement at all.

This Is Where I Was And Will Be Again

These are pictures from my first trip down to Southwest Florida this past October. The 'rents and I are going back down tomorrow so I thought I'd give all one of you a clue to where I was. This is a local park called Ponce De Leone Park. I like this shot because it shows some differences between down there and up here. There's some pretty tacky homes down there. Some homes, maybe that one, are worth about a million dollars and don't look much more interesting than that. By the way, we hope to see a real manatee or two this time... This is Gilchrist Park. That water in the lower left corner is actually part of a big fountain. Again, this shot shows a big difference in climate from up here. Interestingly, this park has the more extravagant Ponce De Leone statue/monument. Weird... We will probably visit this park again at least once while we're down. Remind Me

Remind me to complain how boring and unexciting my life more often because as soon as I did, it got really exciting really fast. Last night, we had four visitors arrive from Korea. They like ziti and garlic bread. Go figure. They will be staying until Sunday night. I told my mother (AKA Hyacinth Bucket) she was making way too much salad but did she listen? No. Now we have this huge-ass bowl of salad in the fridge...What's really irritating is first the fork we use to serve catfood went missing now Susie's dish is missing as well... Tomorrow, I have a physical to prepare for my surgery then I go to my orthopedist's to fill out consent forms. Woo Hoo! I hope I can find time for a haircut as well because... Friday, I have a job interview at a library in Massachusetts! It's a reference job but I also will be conducting a book group. I've never done that but it sounds really fun. Sure, I'll be stuck reading many book that sucks but isn't that what book group i...

Thank You Al Stewart

Well, I'm back from taking care of all those cats. It was actually one cat who had the the run of most of the house and 9 others that stayed in one bedroom; two of which I never saw the whole time. The biggest challenge was changing the litter boxes twice a day. One of the littlest kittens escaped from the room about a half dozen times and was harder and harder to catch. I spent most of my time watching old TV series and movies. I watched episodes of: Magnum PI including the pilot, Hunter including an episode the DVD box hyped had Ed O'Niell in it but also included "Fran McDormand" who perhaps is more well known, Charlie's Angels including the episode that aired originally the day I was born which also happens to be Jaclyn Smith's birthday..., Quantum Leap , Remington Steele , Sledge Hammer , Father Dowling and The Avengers .
