Marvel screwed the pooch with the Thor franchise from the beginning. They took the more modern notion that the Asgardians are aliens not gods. In itself, that's fine but I can't help but think that just made it more complicated not less. (Wonder Woman just killed them off which is better but that's still a big nitpick from me about THAT movie...)
I stopped regularly reading comics after I graduated college in the early part of the century so I don't know when secret identities became passé but I think this also hurt the franchise. Originally, instead of dropping Thor on his head and giving him amnesia, Odin put him the mortal body of Donald Blake and then Eric Masterson. (Was that a complaint about Ghost Rider? Same concept really...)
In Thor: Ragnarok, to me, this '90's era of the comic where Eric Masterson WAS Thor was the best run of the comic and there were many Easter eggs from that period from Thor's Earth garb (with Mjolnir disguised as an umbrella) to the lightning "sparkles;" in the eyes especially. The comedy of Chris Hemsworth both physical and in dialogue was straight out of that period as well. LOVED IT!
In the comics, the movie's villain, Hela, is actually Loki's daughter not their older sister. As a fan of comics and science fiction, I can think of ways she'd still be as powerful as she appears here but simplifying the genetics had the added benefit of giving Marvel the first real female villain; Nebula aside, I suppose...
The addition/introduction of Valkyrie was great and look forward to seeing more of her somehow but where was Sif? Unlike the Warriors Three, she didn't even get a mention. Yes, I know, Jaimie Alexander was not available due to my favorite Friday show Blindspot and you can't hide a new actress behind a beard but I don't even recall her name, unlike Jane Foster, being mentioned? In some versions, she's one of the Valkyries...
Marvel plans to stop big team-up movies soon but I'd be shocked if they don't insert Hulk into more solo movies. Spider-Man is almost too obvious but that's just me...
