Observations

It is much cooler now and I am happy. I did an observation at a high school library yesterday morning. I watched a junior English class learn how to do citations. Since when do classes have to be taken to a library for that? In my day, the teacher of the class did that him or herself and we were taken to the library only to use the library’s resources and taught how to, of course. Is this how it is now? Overall, I have mixed reviews about the experience. On one hand, I think I’m more compatible with juniors over kindergarten students but I think that observation was more fun for me. You can probably draw on your own experiences of high school during the last couple weeks to guess why. Here’s an interesting twist: a friend, hearing about my observation of the elementary school called last night and arranged for me to visit her school’s library. I do that tomorrow morning. I hope I remember and am not just fixated by the exam/interview I have tomorrow evening... Recently, we watched the ...

SW Musings and a Bit More

I really don’t have much to say but I had some free time so I figured I’d blog. The other day, my mother wanted to see Star Wars again so we went. It was, of course, just as good the second time. Besides the fact Aunt Beru really let herself go, a couple things still bothers me: I realize Obi Wan wouldn’t recognize the Droids at first we they meet up in ANH since astromech and protocol droids look alike but wouldn’t he remember the names? And Artoo’s memory wasn’t erased apparently so why hadn’t "he" ever related the story or something especially the part about how C-3PO was created. I can imagine the twins asking about their mother between movies but it might have been nice to have let the audience in on what they were told especially since the discussion of it in the novels turns out to be crap. Last night, we went to see the documentary Mad Hot Ballroom. It was about this middle school ballroom dance competition in NYC. I admit that really don’t like most documentaries but...

Ugh. It's Getting Hot Again.

Greetings! I’ve been meaning to post for awhile now but every time I’m in the mood something comes up. Also, it seems that my personal life is what interests you readers so I had to wait until something of interest came up. Today, I observed library at a local elementary school on the invitation by a friend of a friend. (Who know networking could get so complicated?) I got a tour and observed story time with a kindergarten class and then watched them check- out books. It was an interesting and informative morning. Currently, I am not certified to work in a school library (I should clarify that for the neophytes that read this that college libraries, though schools are referred to as academic libraries.) But I’m entertaining the possibility of getting such certification now that I know my student teaching can actually be done in a library setting as opposed to a classroom. Since I already have a master’s degree, the thinking is it may only be a few courses. I would love more input on th...

Endings and Beginnings

I’ll begin with the “important” news first. A couple of weekends ago now, I and my family went to Boston so that I could march in my third commencement ceremony. Yes, I officially in every way am now a Master of Library Science. Of course, I’m still looking for that first professional job but it’s a beginning. Some may be surprised to learn that I’m taking this “fresh start” thing to the extreme: I’ve applied for, among other places, an Academic Librarian Residency at the University of Minnesota. I know some of you are thinking that’s a long way to go, far from anyone I know but, really, no one comes down to Connecticut to visit anyway. In fact, most don’t even e-mail so it probably won’t be that different. Now for the fun stuff. Revenge of the Sith was an exhilarating experience. It’s kind of sad that now Star Trek and Star Wars (proposed TV series non-withstanding) are now done. My parents and I went to see and and ended up in the IMAX theater. (Sure, the movie wasn’t in IMAX form...

Ohio, Maine and Other Assorted Comments

First off, I’d like to welcome all new you new readers to my blog. I have much random topics brewing in my head so let’s begin. My parents are in Scotland right now so I’m here alone with the cat. It’s been a few days and I still turn the tv volume down at night and covwer myself with a towel coming out of the shower even though there are no humans here to care. Susie doesn’t seem to care either way. A couple weekends ago, my parents and I took a trip to Ohio. The main purpose of the trip was to see an old friend who near death but we also saw some other old friends and toured the headquarters of the UCC in Cleveland. My part of the trip was to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That s the best museum I have ever been to in my life. We literally stayed all day. I haven’t done that in a museum ever. The following weekend we headed back up to Maine to see a play my cousin’s daughter was in: a junior version of the play "Honk!" She was spectacular as The Cat. The following day ...

Happy Easter

I wish all of you a Happy Easter. My mother and I went up to Maine for a long weekend. We tried out our new car. The gas mileage is incredible. I also love the sound system. We saw many people and watched many movies. Let's give a rundown: Good: National Treasure , So-So: The orginal Ocean's 11 , Before Sunset Not Good: Friday Night Lights , The Jerry Lewis classic Cinderfella . We also watched The King and I again. That too was pretty good.

Hawks and Other Stuff

Which flock do you follow? The other day we had a hawk, a Northern Harrier to be specific, rip a pidgeon to shreds in or yard. The squirrels have returned but no birds yet. I had never seen that before except on tv I guess. It was something. Went to the semifinals of the America East tournament the other day. We had thought Maine would be playing but the Lady Terriers of BU (We'll call them "The Bitches") had knocked them out. During the first game we were surrounded by Vermont fans. I'm pretty sure they don't get out to civilization much. The UHart fans during the second game were much better behaved. Of course, their team was winning... I've recieved more rejections from libraries but I have three still out so here's hoping. In other news, we recieved word on the stolen car. It was found like two towns over. It sustained damage to the dash where the radio was removed but I guess was more or less intact otherwise. The interesting twist is that, this past ...

Thoughts to Share

Even though no one has pointed out I haven't commented on how my pet sitting went, meaning no one give a rat's ass, I will say it was quite the adventure. Two very active dogs, no cable, no movies plus shitty internet connection equals insanity. They did pay me so yah! Went to see Million Dollar Baby the other day with my father. That movie was definitely a contender for Best Picture; no pun intended. (Or was it?) I almost cried and I'm famous for detatching myself. Speaking of Best Picture, I wanted to comment on this year's Oscars. I thought Chris Rock was hilarious. The fact Jude Law fired his agent for getting him too much work made it all the more funny. I also loved the Daily Show wrap up: "No, Mr. Youngman. I will not take your wife. I have one." In less fun news, I've recently been turned down by three of the libraries I applied for. Currently, three applications are still being considered including the one I was called for an interview at. The...

Three Dog Night

Ok, it's actually only two dogs but it will be for three nights. Yes, my pet sitting business seems to have taken off in this particular town anyway. This time it's for Jessie and Celeb. These dogs are young and spry, or at east younger, so no meds and thankfully I don't have to walk them but since Celeb is actually the grandmother's dog, there's only one run for both to share. If I'm lucky, they'll follow my commands and not run around the neighborhood but this worries me. Also, they don't have cable so my Friday night TV viewing could be seriously curtailed. I brought Book II of the Star Wars "Force Heretic" trilogy with me. The book is terrible but I may just get bored enough to finish reading it. In case I forget, I also will be taking of Magic the cat again on Saturday with a possibility of Sunday. Busy, Busy, Busy. A couple days ago, a video dating service called to ask me to take a survey then called again yesterday for me to set up an...

You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more! 40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax. What Age Do You Act? Ok, first I apparently belong in the year before I was born but am a year younger at heart. I guess no one really has to tell me to act my age! In other news, I found a job opening up in Waterbury, a place which I have referred to as a one of the Circles of Hell on more than one occassion. I was only an English minor in school but I think that's known as i...

Crime In CT

I finally have something important to discuss. My mother's car was stolen right out of the driveway. Her glasses were in it so now she can't see well enough to read anything. To add to the intrigue, I was home when it happened and heard nothing. Her car doesn't have rear speakers or even a tape deck so no kid would want to take it for a joy ride. We don't know the exact time of the incident so it could be anywhre by now but hopefully it's still in the metropolitan area. The police accused me of taking it. (Of course, how are they to know I don't drive....) They also informed us of the fine if this was a scam. Those who know my family, do you think we'd do that? No, but I understand why the mentioned it. My mother is extremely shook up. I'm afraid she'll never be the same. At least not for awhile... I'll end on a happier note : You Belong in 1976 1976 If you scored... 1950 - 1959: You're fun loving, romantic, and more than a little innoce...

Weekend Update

My readers can probably imagine how happy I am that the Patriots won the Super Bowl. I still find it amusing that a local newscaster said that all that was needed now was the Celtics to win the championship. If that indeed does happen, as great as that would be, Lady Vader's comments about child sacrifice would definitely apply. The Celtics once again suck this season. It appears that The Flash might actually appear in an episode Justice League Unlimited this season. I'll keep you posted since I know you all care. I think my job interview went well the other day but I'll let you know how it really turned out when I hear the news.

Two Things

It's official, Enterprise has been cancelled. WTF? As I've mentioned, this season they are finally doing the stories I wanted them, and expected them, to do all along. This only points the blame on two people Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. There was a time, if one considers Roddenberry the "God of Trek", Berman was Jesus. (Afterall, his birthday is December 25th.) We all realize now that this is not the case. He's credited with co-creating DS9 but I realize now he had less to do with it than I thought. Brannon Braga is alright if there's someone competant to cover his ass. First Contact was a totally awesome movie but was co-written with Ronald D. Moore. They should have been fired long ago. Oh, I have a job interview on Wednesday with the UConn Law Library....

Job Hunt Update

So, I won't be going to West Palm Beach after all. I talked to them on the phone the other day and was told that had 40 applicants. Because I had applied before I actually received my degree, my name was removed from the list. Logically, this makes sense since, well, we all know what happened to me this past May in that regard. If you don't remember, please refer to the archives. I was a little upset by it but the job not last but low on the list of jobs I really actually wanted. Right now, Cambridge and Naples are at the top of the list and still in play. In other job news, the listings are a little stale. Oh well...
